Long, lustrous locks never go out of fashion though harsh hair treatments, hormonal changes during pregnancy or the menopause, stress, and poor diets are often thought to be the cause of hair lost. In fact, sustained hair thinning in women is usually hereditary. As genetic predisposition to hair thinning can set in as early as 18-24. The most common form is alopecia androgen, otherwise described as thinning, ’see through’ hair. Alopecia, is genetic and can come either from the mother’s or father’s side of the family.

Because beautiful hair is a sign of youthfulness and longevity, hair loss can leave you feeling confused, helpless, frustrated and angry.

Many women do not realize that hair loss can occur after pregnancy or following discontinuation of birth control pills. It may also follow any sudden physical or psychological stress to the body.

Hair loss in women is associated with ageing, hormones, androgens or a genetic predisposition. By far the most common cause of hair thinning in women is due to Androgenic Dependent Alopecia. This is brought about by the conversion of Testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone
( DHT ). DHT is the main Androgen involved in female hair thinning. A very high percentage of women who suffer hair loss have an excess of DHT. Dihydrotestosterone which destroys the blood supply to the hair follicles. The presence of the hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is a genetically susceptible to man, is necessary for this problem to occur. Various forms of estrogen can “oppose” androgens and thereby reduce their availability to the cell, by blocking androgen receptors.

Hair loss in female occurs in more than one pattern. Hair Loss is caused by the actions of two enzymes; Aromatase (found predominantly in women) and 5-a reductase (found in both women and men). The reason that women experience hair loss during and after menopause is that their estrogen levels decline. Female pattern alopecia affects approximately one-third of all susceptible women, but is most commonly seen after menopause. Common or “hereditary” baldness in women, also called female pattern alopecia.

Another less common form is alopecia areata, which starts as a tiny bald patch the size of 10-pence piece and can sometimes result in the total loss of hair. It is estimated that as many as a quarter of the population¹ are affected by one of these conditions. It is estimated that as many as a quarter of the population¹ are affected by one of these conditions. In both cases this can cripple self-confidence in women of any age. Similarly, for females most patients presenting with hair loss have hereditary female pattern hair loss. Some of the less common causes of hair loss, which are reversible with treatment, include thyroid disease, iron deficiency, high fever, surgery or general anesthesia, “crash diets,” childbirth, and certain medications. There are also certain dermatologic scalp disorders that can result in temporary or permanent hair loss, such as alopecia areata.

Stress can be a cause of female hair loss and female hair loss is a major cause of stress. We do know that stress causes many forms of alopecia. However, the exact relationship between stress and Alopecia is unclear.

It is important to understand that on average, the life of a single hair is 3 – 5 years.

Normal hair loss is defined as between 70 – 120 hairs per day though hairs from their scalps every day due to the natural process whereby some hairs go into a dormant state (telogen), and others come out of this state and begin to sprout a new hair (anagen). As long as the process remains balanced, the number of hairs on the scalp remains constant.

The hairs on your head germinate at different times, therefore they will not fall out or grow all at the same time.

ü Steer clear of hairstyles that put tension on the hair follicles, such as tight ponytails, chignons and plaits. Think loose and comfortable.

ü Layered cuts can make a big difference in creating the illusion of lustrous locks

ü Avoid the over-use of heated styling tools, such as tongs and straightening irons, which place strain on the hair and can lead to breakage.

ü Play with wigs and hair extensions to show your hair in its best lights or use hats, scarves and any funky jewellery to draw attention away from it.
